MANILA, Philippines -- The Department of Health recorded 204 Filipinos infected with HIV in July 2011, the highest number of new HIV/AIDS cases reported in a month.
Th DOH said that 90 percent of the positive cases were males, whose ages range from 20 to 29 years old. It also said that 107 of the 204 HIV positive cases were from the National Capital Region (NCR).
Dr. Eric Tayag, DOH Assistant Secretary, said a total of 1,220 HIV positive cases were reported in 2011.
At least 27 persons were reported AIDS cases for 2011.
The latest Philippine HIV and AIDS Registry shows a July figure 56 percent higher than the 131 cases recorded for same period last year.
Of the 204 HIV positive cases in July, three were reported as AIDS cases; 20 percent or 40 were OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers), with 32 males and 8 females.
A total of 166 HIV positive OFWs, comprising 14 percent of cases, was recorded during the past first seven months. All were infected through sexual contact.
Meanwhile, the National Voluntary Blood Safety Program (NVBSP), which monitors blood safety of donated blood, reported that from January to July 2011, 124 blood units were confirmed to be positive for HIV by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine.
For July 2011, out of the 78 percent screened HIV reactive blood units referred for HIV confirmation, 22 units were positive for HIV, 1 unit had indeterminate result and 55 were negative for HIV.
Accordingly, from 1984 to 2011, there were 884 AIDS cases reported, 72 percent (634) were males, and of the reported AIDs cases, there were 327 deaths, with sexual contact as the most common mode of HIV transmission, accounting for 93 percent (822) of all AIDS cases. Other modes of transmission include needle sharing among injecting drug users, mother-to-child transmission, and through blood transfusion.
