DSWD says it has P29.31M standby funds, relief supplies for 'Sendong' victims

MANILA, Philippines -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development said Saturday that some P29.31 million in standby funds (P5.36 million) and relief supplies (P23.95 million) are ready for release, when needed, to local government units (LGUs) affected by tropical storm “Sendong.”

Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Soliman has instructed all DSWD regional offices to be on alert and continue to coordinate with concerned LGUs to assess the extent of the storm damage and to be able to immediately provide assistance to affected families.

As of 11 p.m. Friday, some 250 families with 1,500 persons have evacuated to the municipal gymnasium of Lingig, Surigao del Sur, while 10 families with 60 persons sought temporary shelter at the Mangagoy gymnasium in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.

In Region IX, flashfloods occurred in Polangco, Zamboanga del Norte, affecting 468 families with 1,307 persons. The Polangco local government unit immediately distributed 30 bags of noodles, sardines, mineral water, rice, and canned goods to the affected families
