MANILA, Philippines -- With an approaching low pressure area (LPA) off Mindanao and as water hyacinths have started clogging up major bridges and waterways in the province, authorities have raised the alarm to residents of Maguindanao of possible floods.

Undersecretary Benito Ramos, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), urged local officials in Maguindanao to immediately clear up the Delta Bridge as water hyacinths have started accumulating at the mouth of the bridge.

The Delta Bridge was clogged up by several hectares of water hyacinths last year, aggravating floods and displacing hundreds of thousands of residents.

In his visit Monday to Maguindanao, Ramos discovered the water hyacinths at the bridge.

"The area should be cleared up immediately," he said.

The LPA is expected to bring heavy rains across General Santos City as well as Maguindanao.
