Manila, Philippines - #ItsMoreFunInThePhilippines was among the top trending hashtags on Twitter on Friday morning, just 30 minutes after the Philippines unveiled a new international tourism campaign.
The Department of Tourism on Friday unveiled a new slogan - It's More Fun in the Philippines - and a new logo to brand the country's tourism offerings, and kick off an ambitious campaign to attract 12 million tourists annually the archipelago and its 7,107 islands.
For everything it has to offer, the Philippines has long been perceived to be underachieving in the area of tourism. It only gets 3 million tourists a year, compared to Thailand's 15 million. A paltry budget has compelled DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. to say that the new tourism campaign will bank on 10 million Filipinos working abroad, the Filipinos' savvy with the Internet, and social media networks like Facebook and Twitter to extend the reach and impact of the new campaign.
The trending of its devised hashtags seems to confirm the assumptions of hopes of Jimenez. A related brand and hashtag for the domestic tourism campaign - #1forFun - was also the top trending topic for Twitter in the Philippines.
