MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE 2 - 4:35 pm.) The Supreme Court en banc did not issue a temporary restraining order against the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
But the high court will hear the case on its merits, ordering the consolidation of the five petitions seeking to stop Corona's trial and gave the House of Representative 10 days to comment.
Supreme Court spokesman Jose Midas Marquez said Corona presided over the tribunal's en banc session but inhibited himself from the deliberations on the petition to stop the impeachment trial.
Asked to comment Lawyer Tranquil Salvador, a spokesman for the defense panel, described the decision not to issue a TRO a matter of "courtesy" since the trial had already begun. (with a report from Abi Kwok, InterAksyon.com)
