MANILA, Philippines -- Senator Loren Legarda showed up at the Senate Monday saying she would begin attending the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona after being absent for the first two weeks of the proceedings.

Explaining her absence, Legarda said she had gone on official leave to take care of her sick “yaya” (nanny), who underwent surgery for colon cancer.

“She’s … weak but recovering. I (was) her care-giver for two weeks,” she said.

“I am always ready and I am ready for the impeachment trial,” Legarda said in an interview after delivering a privilege speech.

She said she will first observe the proceedings, refraining from commenting or asking clarificatory questions.

“Makikinig muna (I will listen first),” she said.

Legarda said she had been briefed daily by her staff, read the trial transcripts and watched the trial on live television.
