MANILA, Philippines -- The Senate, sitting as the impeachment court in the trial of Chief Jusitce Renato Corona, will have an all-senators caucus today before the resumption of the trial to decide whether or not to cite in contempt the president of Philippine Savings Bank (PS Bank) who refused to divulge information on Corona's dollar account in the bank.
In his ruling Wednesday, presiding judege Juan Ponce Enrile said: “This is not a show cause order. The order to you is to submit a written explanation to this court."
Senator Franklin Drilon wanted to cite PSBank president Pascual Garcia III in contempt for disobeying the subpoena to bring before the impeachment court Corona's bank records.
Garcia explained that he could not bring documents related to dollar accounts as this is against the Foreign Currency Deposit Act.
Senator Joker Arroyo came to Garcia's defense and said the bank official has not done anything contemptuous of the court.
“My colleague seems to be in a hurry to crucify this witness," Arroyo said, pointing out that the Bill of Rights is for everyone, every time.
