21 Filipino seamen are being held hostage by Somali pirates, the Philippine embassy in Manamah, Bahrain, reported.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez, the Filipino crewmen onboard the M/V Free Goddess, a Greek-owned bulk carrier, were kidnapped by Somali pirates off the western coast of the Socotra islands, Yemen.
The DFA has instructed its embassy in Bahrain to coordinate with embassy officials in Greece and Kenya to keep track of the negotiations with the pirates.
There are now 47 Filipinos on board 4 vessels being held captive by pirates.
Neptune Maritime Security reported that the Free Goddess was "enroute from Adabiya, Egypt to Singapore, carrying 19,475 metric tons of steel cable with the crew of 21 Filipinos on board."
The report added that the Liberian-flagged vessel "is not responding to any calls." Based on its last coordinates, the vessel was believed to be "heading towards the Somali coast."
