CEBU CITY -- The full-blown implementation of mandatory kindergarten schooling will start next school year with the passage of the Kindergarten Education Act, education officials said.
Department of Education (DepEd) 7 Director Recaredo Borgonia said the agency is now working hard to address shortages in schools in preparation for the opening of more kindergarten classes next school year.
The DepEd, he said, anticipates an increase in the enrollment in kindergarten.
Signed by President Benigno Aquino III last January 20, Republic Act 10157, or the Kindergarten Education Act aims to institutionalize kindergarten education into the basic education system.
Borgonia said the law mandates the government to allocate funds for the implementation of the mandatory kindergarten, which is one of the components of the new basic education program being pushed by DepEd.
Dubbed the K to 12 Enhanced Basic Education Program, the new curriculum comprises mandatory kindergarten, six years of elementary education, four years of junior high school, and two years of senior high school.
Incoming Grade 1 and First Year high school students will be covered by the 12-year basic education cycle.
There are 139,273 kindergarten enrollees in the region in the present school year.
The mandatory kindergarten is in line with the country’s commitment to the “Education for All” movement.
The movement has six goals, which include expanding early childhood care and education, attaining a 50 percent improvement in adult literacy and achieving gender equality in education by 2015.
Last January 28, DepEd held a nationwide early registration of pupils and students for school year 2012-2013.
The early registration is part of DepEd’s efforts to ensure that all children, with ages five and six, will be enrolled in kindergarten and Grade 1 next school year.
