MANILA, Philippines – The private operator of the country’s power transmission highway is choosing between two project that would prepare the Visayas grid for expansion.
Giovanni R.A. Galang, National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) planning department deputy manager, told reporters that the company is looking into the P36 billion Cebu-Negros-Panay 230-kilovolt transmission backbone project, which will require 50 kilometers of submarine cables and 131 kilometers of overhead power lines to connect the three major islands in the Visayas.
If pursued, the project would allow dispatch of a projected 400 megawatts from Panay to the two other islands.
The second option is the P3 billion Negros-Panay 130 kilovolt interconnection project, which requires 18 kilometers of submarine cables and 30 kilometers of transmission lines to dispatch 90 megawatts of power from Panay.
"The first option has a bigger capacity because there is this much capacity from Panay --420 megawatts. So instead of just installing the second circuit [for the second option] why not put a bigger capacity and extend it going eastward to Cebu. But again, our reservation is the cost of the project," Galang said.
He said the company next week will hold dialogues with stakeholders and the Department of Energy.
