Enrile 'apologizes' to Tupas

MANILA, Philippines - Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Wednesday apologized -- outside of the court -- to Iloilo Rep. Niel Tupas for his temperament when he discharged two witnesses for Article 2, and lambasted the prosecution in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona last Tuesday.

“I am sorry for my temperament yesterday. You people will learn a lot here as part of your training,” Enrile told Tupas after they met in an alley leading to the back door going to the Senate’s parking garage.

On Day 21 of the trial on Tuesday, Enrile assailed Tupas when he sought reconsideration of Enrile’s decision on Enrique Javier, Philippine Airlines vice president for sales, who was supposed to testify on the supposed perks that Corona received from PAL even while the airline’s case was pending in court.

In seeking reconsideration, Tupas told the Senate president that “technicalities cannot be permitted to prevail in such an important proceeding.”

After his brief off-court exchange with Enrile, Tupas said he accepted the apology made by Enrile, adding he understood quite well the burden of the Senate chief in presiding at the historic trial.
“Walang problema naman doon kasi (There is no problem there because), it’s natural for a person sometimes when you have an outburst, and after a while you will realize (the thing you have said),” Tupas said.

“Actually, he [said] sorry three times,” Tupas told InterAksyon.com.
