MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE: 8:14 PM) The San Beda College of Law condemned the apparent hazing death of freshman Marvin Reglos and said that the school "does not recognize" the existence of the fraternity allegedly involved in the incident.
Also on Wednesday, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima told the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct a parallel probe alongside the police, and assured Reglos’s family of speedy justice.
In a statement coursed through The Bedan, the official newspaper of San Beda, the San Beda College of Law called the act "unlawful and (a) dreadful act of violence" and said it would cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies to help bring justice to Reglos.
"We grieve over a life put to waste. The San Beda College of Law condemns the system of brotherhood that employs violence, intimidation, intentional force, or reckless imprudence as part of any of its ceremonies or practices. Consequently, the school does not recognize their existence," the statement said.
"The San Beda College of Law seems to be quiet in the middle of this tragedy but rest assured that San Beda College of Law does not toil on half-baked justice. In cases involving our law students, the San Beda Law administration immediately acts to protect their rights," it added.
The San Beda College of Law said it has created a committee to conduct the investigation on the administrative aspect of the incident.
De Lima meets victim’s father
Justice Secretary de Lima on Wednesday assured the father of Marvin Reglos of a speedy and thorough investigation into his death, so the culprits can be brought to justice.
De Lima met with Reglos’s father Lucito and sister Lorviefor half an hour in her office. She directed the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct a parallel inquiry into the case, besides that being done by the police.
The body of Reglos, a freshman law student at San Beda College who was seeking admission to a fraternity, will undergo a re-autopsy by the NBI medico legal team.
De Lima is asking the NBI to invite the fraternity leaders to shed light on the matter, even as she appealed to her “brods” to face the issue squarely and not to shield the culprits. De Lima is a member of the sorority counterpart of Reglos’ fraternity.
Reglos’s father Lucito is convinced his son died as a result of hazing, given the tell-tale “paddle” marks on his thighs and various parts of his body.
The family acceded to having Reglos’s wake be held briefly at San Beda chapel if only to show other youths, said Lucito, the evils of hazing.
Reglos’s body will be brought later to their home province in Isabela for burial. The family is awaiting the return of his mother Myrna, an overseas Filipino worker in Korea.
At the San Beda Abbey, friends and classmates of Reglos were still in disbelief about his death.
