MANILA -- The Department of Health (DOH) has advised the public buy "halo-halo and palamig" from trustworthy sources to avoid suffering from diarrhea and other illnesses.

Medical specialist II Manuel Mapue, Infectious Disease coordinator of DOH-Center for Health Development-Metro Manila, said that the public should take extra precautions in buying of refreshments so as not to compromise their health.

"Siguraduhin na ang bilbilhin nila na tubig, yelo sa halo-halo, o palamig ay malinis. Be cautious. Pwedeng pamatid uhaw pero buhay mo naman ang nakasalalay diyan," Mapue said.

He advised the public to buy from vendors who are hygienic in food preparation or get water or crushed ice from safe sources.

Accordingly, crushed ice or water sources from the refreshments could be contaminated due to unsanitary handling. Halo halo ingredients may be contaminated with the coliform bacteria found in the feces of man and other warm-blooded animals.

The public may suffer from diarrhea, cholera, hepatitis A, typhoid fever, and other illnesses when they indiscriminately buy street foods, or demand cold drinks or refreshments, Mapue said.

He urged the public to instead prepare their own food or these refreshments for the safety of their families.
