MANILA, Philippines -- Four robbery suspects died in an alleged shootout with police in Quezon province following a car chase past midnight Wednesday.
A report from Quezon police said personnel manning a checkpoint at the Diversion Road in Barangay Gulang-gulang Junction, Lucena City tried to flag down a red Toyota Innova without license plates around 2:20 a.m.
Police at the checkpoint had been alerted that the vehicle was involved in a robbery in Candelaria town.
Instead of stopping, the vehicle sped up and rammed the police barrier and headed towards Pagbilao town.
When authorities gave chase, the passengers of the Innova fired at them, triggering the gunfight along the Maharlika Highway in Purok Baybayin, Barangay Ibabang Dupay.
Three suspects died on the spot while the fourth died at the Quezon Medical Center.
Police recovered a caliber .45 pistol, two caliber .38 revolvers and an Ingram submachine gun.
Authorities were yet to identify the slain suspects as of this posting.
