MANILA, Philippines – A worker fell to his death in an accident at a building being constructed for SM Development Corp. (SMDC) near the Welcome Rotonda in Quezon City.

Details as to why the worker fell are sketchy, but a statement by SMDC later on Tuesday said it “regrets the unfortunate accident that happened this morning at our project site in Welcome Rotonda, Quezon City.”

The SM firm added that it had contacted the contractor – the Engineering Equipment, Inc. (EEI) – that, in turn, “committed to take care of all the expenses related to the accident.”

The SM statement said the property firm was “assured by EEI that their representatives were already in touch with the victim’s family for whatever assistance that they would need.”

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) had tightened its guidelines for construction companies after the death of six workers about 18 months ago in Makati City, when a scaffolding fell in a condominium being built for Eton Properties.
