Manila, Philippines—Senators expressed support for Malacanang’s decision to seek US assistance on China’s intrusion in Scarborough shoal, Radyo Singko reported Wednesday.

Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Vice Chairman Senator Edgardo Angara said that there is nothing wrong with seeking help from US since Washington and Manila have long been allies, especially on ensuring national security.

Senator Gringo Honasan agreed, adding that while the Philippines is not fully capable of protecting its territories, it is only practical to ask for America’s assistance.

For his part, National Defense and Security Chair Senator Panfilo Lacson said seeking support from Uncle Sam is sensible, considering that US and Philippines are bound by military agreements as stated in the Mutual Defense Treaty.

“Besides asserting help from America, Philippines should also seek assistance to neighboring Asian countries as well as other countries like Europe,” Lacson added.

Meanwhile, the US Army said it was elated over the 67 good years of partnership and teamwork of the US and the Philippine armed forces. Deputy Director for United States Army General Roger Matthews even said that both countries are ready to support each other in times of need. (Romsanne Ortiguero, InterAksyon.com)
