QUEZON CITY, Philippines- For 200 pesos per container, teenage boys residing in the area around Araneta Avenue submerge themselves in a creek filled with garbage to collect containers of grease waste allegedly emitted by Pentagon Steel Corporation.
According to some residents, the foul smell of the substance has caused harm to their health conditions. Some experience chest pains and difficulty in breathing.
Pentagon Steel Corporation has declined to give a statement on the issue. The Quezon City government as well has not released any statement yet because they are still waiting for the official report and complaint.
Meanwhile, the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) inspected the creek along Araneta Avenue where crude oil is discharged. Inspection revealed that the used oils were dumped there.
Besides the negative effects of oil on health, the water supply is also feared to be contaminated by the dumped oil.
Violators found liable in the dumping will be held accountable under the Clean Air Act of 1999 at National Effluent Standards (DENR Administrative Order No. 35, series of 1990). Aliana Gimena and Romsanne Ortiguero, with Rommel Lopez, TV5
