BAGUIO CITY – The casualties in the daring Wednesday morning ambush in Ifugao where a group of soldiers and civilians were attacked by suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebels have risen to 13.
Mayor Lopez Pugong of Tinoc, Ifugao said another civilian who was injured in the attack succumbed after hours of medical treatment.
"The first civilian who died was a lady singer. I have no information yet on the second civilian who died while in hospital. There are now 13 dead. Eleven of them were army soldiers," he said.
Pugong said the treacherous attack on the four-vehicle convoy was not expected.
He narrated that prior to the attack there was even a joyful turnover ceremony of the new batch of soldiers who will serve the locality from the 86th Infantry Battalion.
The ambushed soldiers had long been serving Ifugao Province and were on their way back to their mother unit for a possible vacation to see their families when waylaid by the NPAs.
