MANILA, Philippines -- The prosecution and the defense panels are on opposite sides of the proposal of Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile to finish the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona by May 31.
The prosecution said a prolonged trial will cause the public to lose interest on the subject.
But defense lawyer Jose Roy said his side cannot be rushed into presenting their witnesses. He said considerable time is needed to prepare for the trial which the defense cannot avail themselves of if the hearings end at 10 p.m.
At the same time, Roy said the defense will present Corona’s new statement of assets, liabilities, and net worth (SALN) to show a more accurate indication of the chief justice’s economic and financial status.
