MANILA, Philippines -- Seven young miners suffocated to death inside a tunnel in Surigao City Thursday morning, police said.
The Caraga police said only one of the eight miners who entered the tunnel owned by Jonalyn Torre Martinez, Berdan Porlas Avila, made it out alive when their companions, sensing something wrong, dropped them a rope.
The miners entered the tunnel at Sitio File, Barangay Mat-I at 9 a.m. to transfer a hose to another tunnel.
Jomar Estrella, 26, Delvin Antipas, 21, Dexter Antipas, 18, Arnel Palasan, 22, Julius Mayola, 26, Basty Porlas Avila, 23, and Paustino Abendan Pacquiao, 22 were rushed to the Caraga Regional Hospital but were declared dead on arrival.
