MANILA, Philippines -- Four people, including a barangay captain, were killed in a shootout that erupted during a beauty pageant in Iloilo City's Jaro district past midnight Friday, police said.
City police chief, Senior Superintendent Marietto Valerio, said in the middle of the Ms. Summer Babes contest at the covered gym of Barangay Tacas, village caption Rolando Tabuada Jr., with Archie Degoma and still unidentified companions, approached Police Officer 3 Jerome Jaculina, who was seated at a table with his cousin Remy.
A heated argument between Tabuada and the policemen led to the guns being drawn and fired.
Killed in the gunplay were Jaculina, Tabuada, the policeman’s cousin and bystander Avelino Sabidalas.
Archie Degoma, Rio Jaculina, Richard Jaculina and Sonia Apostol were wounded.
Investigators recovered more than 70 .45 caliber, 9 mm and .38 caliber shells and 13 slugs.
Valerio said the gunfight appeared to have been triggered by misunderstanding over the money collected from the pageant.
