2 NPA men, Army private killed in Negros Oriental clash

Two New People's Army (NPA) rebels and an Army soldier were killed following a clash in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, Saturday morning, an Army spokesman said.

Maj. Enrico Ileto, spokesman of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, said members of the Alpha Company, 11th Infantry Battalion clashed with an undetermined number of NPA rebels at the vicinity Sitio, Natae, Brgy. Bucalan at around 7:30 a.m.

Killed during the clash Private First Class Edmund Prieto. Two slain NPA members were identified as Argie Villasan and Elmer Cañete, members of an NPA SPARU (Special Partisan Unit) unit.

One suspected NPA member, Ronnel Josalita, whose house was the site of the encounter, was captured. He was also the one who identified the two dead NPA members.

Recovered from the encounter site were two Caliber .45 pistols, four magazines of Caliber .45 pistols with 23 live ammunition, and one fragmentation grenade.

Ileto said members of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit Active Auxiliary (CAA) have been victims of SPARU operations in Negros. The latest victim was CAA Dandy Quilanan who was killed on Thursday at Sitio Tubod, Barangay Macagahay, Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental. 

Another CAA, Paquito Lacton, unarmed at that time while on his way home with his wife, was gunned down on Tuesday by suspected NPA SPARU members in the vicinity of Barangays Makilignit and Sikatuna of Isabela, Negros Occidental.
