MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 6, 12:09 p.m.) Tropical storm “Bebeng” (international codename: Aere) weakened slightly as it made landfall over northern Casiguran in Aurora province, the state weather bureau said late Monday morning.
As of 11 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration placed the storm at 65 kilometers north northwest of Casiguran and moving north northwest at 15 kph with maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center gusting to 90 kph.
This was down from the previous 85 kph winds with gusts of 100 kph.
Bebeng left nine people dead and another missing as it lashed Eastern Visayas and the Bicol region. The storm also dumped rains on Metro Manila on Sunday, flooding major thoroughfares across the capital region.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Sunday evening said nine-year old Ricsan Sayamore, of Bato, Catanduanes; Lourdes Lantero, 58, of Albay; Jerry Mijares, 38, of Barangay Bonifacio, Lope de Vega, Leyte; Luis Dingcol of Barangay Canlanpay in Cariaga, Leyte, all drowned.
Plaribel Ruelan, 19, Princess Ruelan, and Marco Sanches, 7, died in a landslide that hit Sitio Ikog, Balatan, Camarines Sur.
Aristeo Sabido, 31, was killed after losing control of his pickup truck as he drove in heavy rain along Rolando Highway, Lupi, Camarines Sur. Arnulfo Pesito, 23, was electrocuted in Libon, Albay.
Also in Albay, 16-year old Adrian Clark was reported missing.
During a thunderstorm Saturday night, nine ground crew at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport were injured when lightning struck the aircraft they had taken shelter under. Sunday evening, Philippine Airlines said all nine were out of danger and had sustained only minor injuries.
PAGASA forecast Bebeng to be 90 km southwest of Basco, Batanes on Tuesday morning and 240 km northeast of Itbayat the day after.
Public storm warning Signal No. 2, meaning winds of 60-100 kph are expected, remained hoisted over Aurora, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao, Mt. Province, Kalinga and Cagayan.
Signal No. 1, or winds of 30-60 kph, is up over northern Quezon, Polillo Island, Nueva Ecija, Benguet, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Babuyan, the Calayan group of islands, Batanes and the Babuyan Islands.
Bebeng is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over the rest of southern Luzon and the Visayas.
