MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE - 5:50 p.m.) The death toll from tropical storm "Bebeng" (international code name: Aere) rose to 10 after the body of a missing teenager was found. Two more people remain missing the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported Monday.
By Monday afternoon, the storm continued to move away from Luzon. As of 4 p.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration placed Bebeng 50 kilometers east of Tuguegarao, Cagayan, packing winds of 75 kilometers per hour gusting to 90 kph and moving north at 15 kph.
Public storm warning signal No. 2 remained raised only over Cagayan and Isabela, while Aurora, Quirino, Ifugao, Mt. Province, Kalinga, Apayao, Babuyan, Calayan group of islands and Batanes were under signal No. 1.
The NDRRMC said most of the fatalities died from drowning, electrocution or landslide in the Bicol region.
The body of 16-year old Adrian Clark, who went missing Sunday, was recovered by authorities in Libon, Albay.
The NDRRMC earlier said nine-year old Ricsan Sayamore, of Bato, Catanduanes; Lourdes Lantero, 58, of Albay; Jerry Mijares, 38, of Barangay Bonifacio, Lope de Vega, Leyte; Luis Dingcol of Barangay Canlanpay in Cariaga, Leyte, all drowned.
Plaribel Ruelan, 19, Princess Ruelan, and Marco Sanches, 7, died in a landslide that hit Sitio Ikog, Balatan, Camarines Sur.
Aristeo Sabido, 31, was killed after losing control of his pickup truck as he drove in heavy rain along Rolando Highway, Lupi, Camarines Sur. Arnulfo Pesito, 23, was electrocuted in Libon, Albay.
Still missing are as Agmeti Condat, 66, of Tiwi, Albay, and Rolandro Balandia Nabua of Camarines Sur.
"Bebeng" also displaced over 111,00 people from six provinces.
Heavy rains drenched Metro Manila and triggered landslides in Batasan Hills, Quezon City and the NHA Bilibid Housing project in Muntinlupa City, the NDRRMC said. Flashfloods destroyed one house in Alabang Riverside, Muntinlupa but there were no reported casualties.
During a thunderstorm Saturday night, nine ground crew at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport were injured when lightning struck the aircraft they had taken shelter under. Sunday evening, Philippine Airlines said all nine were out of danger and had sustained only minor injuries.
Floods closed five major roads in the Bicol region and Eastern Visayas: San Jacinto Road in Masbate; Daang Maharlika in Camarines Sur; Lope de Vega to Catarman, Calbayog to Catarman Road, and Brgy. Somoge, Catarman in Northern Samar.
The NDRRMC reported that some municipalities in Northern Samar have no electricity while power interruptions were experienced in the provinces of Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes and Camarines Sur. Power has been restored to Marinduque.
Bebeng is expected to be 120 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes by Tuesday afternoon and 370 kilometers north, northeast of Basco the day after.
