MANILA, Philippines -- The children of the late Jose Maria Basa III said Chief Justice Renato Corona’s statements against their father and family were “untrue, unkind and show his true character.”
“We are very saddened with the development that the name of our good father is being dragged into this proceeding. What he said was untrue, unkind and shows his true character,” Carmen Basa said.
“At this point, we’re not going down to his level, and we will not justify his false statements,” she said.
The mother of Corona’s wife, Cristina, is the sister of Jose III.
The two families have been at odds with each other over properties owned by Basa-Guidote Enterprises Inc., which the Coronas said was one of the sources of their wealth.
With the Basa children watching from the session hall, Corona testified that the BGEI property was awarded to them by the court as compensation for winning a case filed by Jose III against them.
Jose III died in 2002.
In his testimony, Corona called Basa a “spoiled brat,” who lived all his life without a job.
He said Basa sold properties of the family whenever he needed money.
Carmen was accompanied by her siblings, Ana, Franchesca, Isabel and Eric.
They said they would decide if they need to take proper action against Corona after his cross-examination.
