MANILA, Philippines – China on Tuesday welcomed the appointment of Sonia Brady as the country’s ambassador to Beijing.
“The Chinese side welcomes the Philippine side to send its Ambassador to China as soon as possible. This will help the two countries enhance communication through diplomatic channels,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin (not Hong Lei, as earlier reported) said in an e-mail coursed through the Chinese embassy here.
Brady was appointed by President Benigno Aquino III after Filipino-Chinese tycoon Domingo Lee, the President’s first choice as ambassador to China, volunteered to withdraw his nomination. Lee’s appointment had been stalled for almost a year because the Commission on Appointment refused to confirm his appointment.
Brady was a career diplomat before her retirement last year. She had been ambassador to China before. Her appointment comes as the Philippines and China enters the eighth week of a standoff over Scarborough Shoal.
