MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang has hailed the conviction of Chief Justice Renato Corona, saying the ruling of the Senate "strengthened democratic institutions."
"The verdict of the Senate is a step forward in terms of restoring public confidence in our courts and trust in the members of the judiciary," deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said on Tuesday.
"Mr. Corona is merely the public face of the things that ail our justice system," Valte said.
"Let us never forget that those who come to court, be they rich or poor, must do so in the expectation of receiving impartial justice from those who uphold both the spirit and the letter of the law," she added.
President Benigno Aquino III has 90 days to appoint a new chief justice, according to Valte.
Valte said the Senate verdict "is immediately executory" and that the position would remain vacant immediately.
