ISLA VERDE, Batangas -- TV5 visited San Agustin Kanluran Elementary School here last May 26, 2012 to conduct its back to school project, Oplan Sigla sa ‘Skwela.
Now on its third year, the project aims to teach schoolchildren the benefits of proper hygiene in a fun and enjoyable way.
Organized by News 5 Aksyon Center, led by Public Service Head Sherryl Yao, the project has chosen the schoolchildren of Isla Verde to be its beneficiaries this year, because many of them suffer from coughs, colds, and head lice. There are also no hospitals on the island.
Studies show that diseases caused by poor hygiene such as cough, colds, and diarrhea are linked to absenteeism and lack of concentration, which can lead to repeating of classes or even dropping out from school.
“We, at TV5, place great importance on education. Aligned with the DepEd’s mission to improve students’ health and sanitation in schools, we aim to teach them the ABCs of proper hygiene. With this, they will be able to perform better in school,” said Yao.
Kapatid stars Shalani Soledad-Romulo, Arnell Ignacio, Karel Marquez, Alwyn Uytingco, Victor Silayan, Gerald Santos, and Empoy assisted in the proper handwashing and anti-lice shampoo activities.
The schoolchildren were also given a free haircut to prepare them for the school opening on June 4.
Ventriloquist Wanlu entertained the kids with a puppet show.
“Nakikita talaga natin na ang TV5 ay may pagmamahal lalung-lalo na sa ating mga kabataan. Sana maabot nila ang kanilang mga pangarap at sana maabot nila yun nang nakapagtapos (We can see that TV5 really loves the youth. We hope that they would be able to reach their ambition and finish their schooling),” Shalani Soledad-Romulo said.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro also graced the event, and helped distribute TV5 backpacks with school supplies and hygiene kits to almost 1,000 schoolchildren of Isla Verde.
In partnership with One Meralco Foundation, the six schools of Isla Verde were energized with solar power.
Oplan Sigla sa 'Skwela was recognized by the Philippine Quill Awards for excellence in Communication Management in Economic, Social and Environmental Division in 2010.
News 5 Aksyon Center also joined DepEd’s kickoff of Brigada Eskwela in Justo Lukban Elementary School last May 21, 2012.
