MANILA -- The Philippine embassy in Yangon organized the first Business Forum for the Filipino Business Sector in Myanmar last May 30 at the embassy, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
Fifteen members of the Filipino community in Myanmar representing the business sector, composed of businessmen and private professionals, attended the forum which focused on highlighting the investment opportunities in Myanmar for Philippine businesses.
Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar Ma. Hellen B. de la Vega delivered a comprehensive presentation which covered an overview of Myanmar’s business environment, a summary of the bilateral economic relations of the Philippines and Myanmar, and other topics related to the promotion of economic diplomacy in the country.
Participants to the forum also shared their experiences and offered suggestions on how the Philippines can advance its economic interests in Myanmar.
The forum was held in light of dramatic economic reforms underway in Myanmar to further provide Philippine businesses more opportunities to increase their presence in Myanmar’s new economic landscape.
Myanmar recently underwent a series of political reforms such as the release of political prisoners and the holding of legislative elections that allowed democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi to participate. This prompted the United States and the European Union to ease their sanctions on the junta-controlled administration.
