The Bureau of Customs (BOC) will clean up its list of accredited importers to halt fly-by-night companies that have previously attempted to bring in smuggled goods.
Task Force Baklas will review the commission's list of accredited importers and remove questionable companies on it, Customs Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence Danilo Lim said on Monday.
Lim initiated the campaign upon the orders of Commissioner Ruffy Biazon after he received requests from hog and poultry producers to stop smuggling attempts in the sector.
“We will immediately review the list of importers and cleanse it of operators with questionable standing, if not outright fronts of smugglers," Lim said. "Makakaasa ang mga hog and poultry producers natin na aaksyunan natin ito sa pinakamabilis na panahon."
Lim also instructed Customs personnel to fully examine all shipments for smuggled hog and poultry products.
Twelve alert orders were already issued at the Port of Manila that call for a 100 percent examination of shipments at the consignee area, he said.
"We also conducted 167 spot checks of (refrigerated container vans)," Lim added. InterAksyon.com
