ILOILO CITY -- Grade 1 teachers of various private schools in Iloilo City are currently being trained for the implementation of the K to 12 as they too are enjoined to adopt the program.

Division of City Schools assistant superintendent, Dr. Ma. Luz de Los Reyes said that the K to 12 rolled out this school year in basic education curriculum (BEC) as mandated by the Department of Education (DepEd) Memorandum 31, series of 2012.

The memorandum also encouraged private schools to enhance their curriculum by embracing the K to 12 program. Private schools can design their curriculum to also fit the needs of their students.

The K to 12 started with the Universal Kindergarten in school year 2011-2012. Starting this school year, the new curriculum for Grade 1 and Grade 7 takes effect.

The assistant superintendent said that simultaneous with the K to 12 was the adoption of the multi-lingual mother tongue-based, where pupils were being taught on their first language for better understanding.

De Los Reyes said that Filipino and English were being treated as separate subjects. All subject areas will be taught in their mother tongue until the second grading period while English will be introduced during the third grading period.

Meantime, Grade 1 teachers from public schools are up for another training on June 19-22 for the preparation of their instructional materials. K to 12 program is now being implemented in all public schools in the city.

She said her office looks forward to having its teachers a complete understanding of the program since they already underwent the necessary trainings before the start of the school year.

“There are problems but are manageable. Our teachers are excited and eager of the new program,” she said.

She added that teachers have been provided with lesson plans, teaching guide, guide curriculum, and other materials for the program.

Meanwhile, first day of classes opened smoothly in Iloilo City amid the drizzle that was experienced early Monday morning.

School heads and supervisors have been instructed to accept late enrollees until Friday, according to de Los Reyes, although in their monitoring they haven’t received feedback on late registrants.

She added that students who were enrolled last year were being verified if they had registered for this school year. If not the school has to exhaust all possible means to locate the whereabouts of students and ensure that they are enrolled.
