What's a Filipino? Filipinos are plug-and-play

Product engineer Vivette Ilagan says Filipinos are always working hard and hanging tough, and are therefore 'compatible' with any place in the world.

What's a Filipino? What defines us—and more important, what binds us; what dreams unite us—now that we're scattered all over the world, born to a mix of races, into different cultures, speaking different languages? This article is one of a series exploring the notion of "being Filipino" in a globalized world and time. In this technology-driven era, I would say that Filipinos are "plug-and-play."

Just like an electronic device which automatically configures itself to the system, Pinoys all over the world easily blend well with people, surroundings and culture. We're compatible with any place.

My husband and I have been out of the Philippines for almost 13 years.

My two sons practically grew up in a foreign land and haven't had the chance to stay longer than two weeks in the Philippines.

We had been permanent residents of Singapore for almost 12 years, and now we're living in B.C. Canada as immigrants for almost a year now.

Will this be our last stop? Only God knows.

But, it's no joke moving in and out of different countries, exploring all the possible opportunities; it's quite an adventure but a nerve-wracking, risky decision to make.

With all the different life episodes, happy and sad stories, successes and failures I've seen, with all the life challenges we've been through, I can say Pinoys are truly tough. Well-seasoned, well-rounded...plug-and-play...anywhere!

What makes us stand out?

We always do our best, we hang tough. We care. We pray. Oh, and not to forget: We love to eat, have fun, and we LOL...all the time!
