MANILA, Philippines - Ten people, mostly teachers, were rescued Friday after a pump boat capsized off Samar while storm "Butchoy" was approaching the area, a police official said.
Superintendent Avelino Doncillo, Catbalogan City police chief, said the pump boat loaded with eight passengers and two boat operators capsized off Brgy. Birawan, Daram, 5 p.m. Friday while en route to Catbalogan City. The pump boat was met with huge waves while several meters away from the shore of Catbalogan.
The passengers were all teachers who came from school in Daram. A team from the local Coast Guard was sent to rescue them.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has repeatedly issued warnings against going out to sea due to the approaching storm.
