MANILA, Philippines – What would have been simple relief operations by a congressman became a virtual Fans’ Day in flashflood-devastated parts of Sarangani province Sunday when its famous congressman, boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, rushed home to bring comfort to victims.
With an exuberant Mommy Dionesia by his side, Pacquiao cheered up residents of 10 villages in Glan who were badly affected by flashfloods earlier this week.
The Pacman and the Pacmom stirred up the crowd, drawing smiles and applause before distributing relief goods, mainly a sack of rice and box of sardines for each family. Pacquiao said these were bought with his personal funds.
Before leaving, Pacquiao, one of the world’s richest athletes, also announced he will donate land to relocate those whose homes and farms were wiped out and cannot go back to high-risk areas. He will also give out cash aid for rebuilding houses.
Pacquiao rushed home Saturday morning for a five-day visit, cutting short his vacation in Los Angeles on learning of the disaster in Sarangani, especially in Glan, which lies at its southernmost tip. He will fly back to LA next week to fetch wife Jinkee and their children for a long-awaited tour of Jerusalem.
