MANILA, Philippines -- Senators Miriam Defensor-Santiago and Franklin M. Drilon, and former Ombudsman Simeon Marcelo have been nominated for the position of Chief Justice.
This is not the first time that Santiago's name has been included in the list of nominees for the highest position in the Judiciary.
In 2006, a group of young lawyers nominated Santiago for Chief Justice of the SC to replace Artemio V. Panganiban. However, Santiago was not included in the short list of nominees of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC).
Santiago was nominated by a certain Victor del Rosario from Biliran.
Likewise, Marcelo was also nominated in 2010 after the retirement of Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno on May 17, 2010.
On the other hand, this is the first time that Drilon, a known ally of President Benigno S. Aquino III, has been nominated for a position in the Judiciary.
As of Tuesday, there are more than 60 nominees and applicants for the Chief Justice post with only 13 having so far accepted their respective nomination.
The period of application and nomination for the position of Chief Justice will expire on July 2, 2012.
