MANILA, Philippines - At least 13 suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) were killed while five others were captured in two separate encounters between the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines and the Philippine Army in the provinces of Quezon and Zambales Saturday morning. 

Maj. Gen. Eduardo del Rosario, commander of the Army's 2nd Infantry Division and a squad of soldiers led by a certain Corporal Ballasta from the Bravo Company of the 74th Infantry Battalion encountered more than 15 alleged NPA rebels in Sitio Makuyokuyo, Barangay White Cliff, San Narciso, Quezon.

Nine suspected rebels who were killed on the spot in the firefight in Quezon, which happened past 11 a.m. Two other alleged rebels died while undergoing first aid treatment by Army medics.

Del Rosario said the encounter in Quezon also hurt a certain Private First Class Badulid who was hit by a bullet in his lower right arm.

Earlier in the day, soldiers of the 24th Infantry Battalion killed two other suspected rebels and captured five others in a 20-minute firefight in Sitio Bihawo, Barangay Villar, Botolan, Zambales.

“Among those who died were Albarillo, the secretary of the SPN Berto Gueurilla Unit 2 of the Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee and two amazons,” del Rosario said.
