DAVAO CITY, Philippines -- The Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Region 11 has issued a cease and desist order on the operations of hundreds of small-scale miners who have flocked to the tri-boundary of Mati City and the towns of Manay and Tarragona.

MGB 11 Director Edilberto Arreza confirmed issuing the order against what he estimated were a thousand small-scale miners monitored within the tenement of Oro East Mining Company, on June 19.

“Yes we have investigated the area,” Arreza said.

He said Oro East will implement the CDO with the assistance of the police, military and local government unit.

On Friday, Mati Mayor Michelle Rabat also ordered the small-scale mining investigated.

“There are reports of mining activities in certain parts of Barangay Don Salvador Lopez by numerous prospectors which have reached an alarming level as it is exerting substantial impact on the peace and order of the city,” Rabat’s order said.

"According to the barangay captain of Don Salvador there are a lot of gold miners -- ten thousand of them. I have formed a task force to look into it," she added.
