MANILA, Philippines -- Two young Philippine musicians landed in the winners’ circle of the recent 2nd Thailand Mozart International Piano Competition held June 25-28 in Bangkok.

Matthew Calderon, 25, a junior at the Philippine High School for the Arts, took was the sole winner in Category B (ages 9-17), taking second place.

A student of Mary Anne Espina, Calderon played Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV 847; Mozart’s Sonata in C Major, K. 330,

Allegro moderato; and Brahms’ Rhapsody in G minor, Op. 79, No. in the semi-final round.

In the finals, he played Schumann’s Aufschwung Op.12, No.2; and Mozart’s Sonata in C Major, K. 330, Allegro moderato and Andante cantabile.

Denise Faith See, 16, a senior from Jubilee Christian Academy, placed third in Category A (ages 17-24).

A student of Anthony Say, See played Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in B-flat Major, BWV 866; and Chopin’s Etude Op. 10, No. 12 and Scherzo No.2, Op. 31.

For the finals, she chose Mozart’s Sonata in D Major, K. 576

See shared third place honors with China’s Ray Chi-hang Long.

The first prize in Category A went to Thaya Kongpakpaisarn of Thailand.
