Former actor and Quezon City mayor Herbert Bautista has joined the growing clamor to declare Dolphy as a national artist.
Bautista, Dolphy's godson, backed calls for Dolphy to be declared as anational artist as he said “Ninong Dolphy” is one of the film industry’s greatest treasures.
“I am in full support of Ninong Dolphy to be declared as a nationalartist. He has contributed so much to the Philippine entertainment industry,” the city mayor said in a statement.
Early this week, the mayor ordered the Philippine flag at City Hall to be flown at half-mast after Dolphy's passing of Dolphy last Tuesday.
Bautista also did a remake of Dolphy’s popular movie “Jack and Jill” back in his acting days.
Last year, the city government awarded Dolphy as one of its 2011 Outstanding Citizens for his contributions to Filipino cinema.
“As we grieve for the loss of one of the precious citizens the cityhad, it is more rewarding if we keep in mind and treasure the tears and laughter that the Comedy King of Philippine cinema has left in ourhearts,” Bautista added.
