MANILA, Philippines - "We had so much fun together."
This was how veteran actor Eddie Gutierrez described his relationship with the late Comedy King Dolphy.
Gutierrez, who worked with Dolphy in several films, described the late actor as one of the nicest persons in the entertainment industry.
"Para sa akin si Dolphy is a perfect gentleman. Napakabait na tao hindi lamang sa kaibigan, sa mga anak kungdi pati sa mga fans niya," Gutierrez said during the eulogy for the comedian held at The Heritage Park. (He was so warm and kind to everyone, not only to his friends, children, and his fans.)
The actor recalled that Dolphy would come to the set carrying with him an attache case that was filled with money, which he would readily give out to anyone who would ask for his help.
Gutierrez, who worked with Dolphy in eight films, recalled that the comedian was one of the first persons to greet him when he first signed his contract with Sampaguita Pictures in 1958.
"Dolphy was the first one to greet me and talk to me and made me feel at home. He was already a big star then. He had just finished Jack and Jill, and he was very friendly to me and the first time we did a film was after two years in 1960," Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez also said Dolphy was not only the Comedy King but also an action star and a dramatic actor.
"To me, Dolphy is the best-dressed actor in Philippine movies. Minsan naka-rubber shoes, maong, T-shirt, at sombrero pero napakagandang tingnan when Dolphy wears clothes like that," he said. (Even though he dresses in rubber shoes, jeans, a T-shirt, and a hat, he was so good to look at.)
He said he was lucky to have a friend like Dolphy.
"We had so much fun together. I learned a lot from him," Gutierrez said.
