MANILA, Philippines - A fellow comedian expressed gratitude to Dolphy on Thursday, saying that the King of Comedy gave him his break in showbusiness.
Long Mejia recounted that he was finally able to approach Dolphy despite being turned away several times by a security guard who told him that positions for extras—persons employed to become members of the crowd in a movie scene—were already filled up.
"When I saw him emerge from his car to do a taping for his show, Plaza 1899, I simply approached him and asked that I be included as an extra," Mejia said in his eulogy for Dolphy at the Heritage Park in Taguig City.
Immediately, Dolphy accommodated him, and even put his arm around his shoulder, a gesture that was seen by the security guard who turned him away, Mejia recalled.
"Sa tulong mo naging artista ako," Mejia said.
Mejia said he named his eldest son, Rodolfo, after the late actor.
