MANILA, Philippines -- Police and military operatives arrested on Thursday an alleged member of the Abu Sayyaf linked to the 1994 kidnapping of an American priest.

Orie Manuri, alias Salam and allegedly a trusted henchman of Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon, was arrested in Barangay Cabunbata, Isabela City, Basilan by personnel of the 9th the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and Air Force intelligence agents.

He is a suspect in July 31, 1994 kidnapping of Fr. Clarence William Bertelsman.

The priest was rescued hours after he was seized from the Asturias chapel in Jolo, Sulu.

He was also linked to a 1998 clash in Barangay Baungis, Lantawan, Basilan in which 14 Special Forces soldiers died.
