MANILA, Philippines - Residents of Marikina, who returned to their homes after the rainfall alert was lowered on Wednesday, found themselves going back to evacuation centers where they were taken after the water level at Marikina River has risen again past the critical level early Thursday.
As of 4:55 a.m., water levels at the Marikina River rose to 20.5 meters above sea level and was seen rising due to the heavy volume of water flowing from the mountains of Montalban that were brought about by continuous rains from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.
Water levels have gone down earlier when the rains ceased but a sudden heavy downpour caused the river to suddenly swell again.
Evacuations are still ongoing for residents affected by severe flooding.
Information from the Marikina City government showed that a total of 6,774 families or 40,929 persons have already been evacuated.
