TOKYO - Survivors of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki during World War II remain at high risk of developing mental illnesses 67 years on, even when they appear to have suffered no health damage physically, according to a recent study by a government research institution. The research was conducted by the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry in Tokyo by reexamining a study conducted in 2001 on some 350 survivors who were within a radius of 12 kilometers from ground zero at the time of the bombing on Aug. 9, 1945, and who were considered to have suffered no physical ill-effects from radiation.
The latest study showed that about 75 percent were found to be at high risk of contracting mental illnesses. Researchers asked if those people subject to the study had any psychological problems such as depression.
