The Philippine Embassy and the University of the Philippines Alumni Association-United Kingdom (UPAA-UK) hosted 11 Filipino student-athletes to breakfast at the chancery on Sunday, August 5.
The athletes topped the “Batang Pinoy” program being run by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), which selects the country’s most promising youth athletes.
The group was in London as scholars in a two-week international summer program at St. Bede’s School in Sussex, under the auspices of the British Council Philippines, MVP Sports Foundation and PSC. The athletes also had the opportunity to personally watch some of the events of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The 11 student-athletes were (boxer) Roberto Miguel Jalnaiz, (triathlete) Gabrielle Allen Santiago, (taekwondo jin) Irene Therese Bermejo, (swimmer) Ariana Caraos Herranz, (judoka) Flord Derek Rillera, (badminton shuttlers) Joella Geva de Vera and John Edgard Reyes, (shotputter) Garry Santiago, (sprinter) Mary Anthony Diesto, (archer) Bianca Cristina Gotuaco, and (weightlifter) John Kyle Macrohon.
