MANILA, Philippines -- Authorities lowered the alert over the Marikina River to Level 1 Friday morning after its waters dropped to 15 meters, well below the crisis level of 19 meters.
For the past three days, residents of Marikina City communities near the river had been evacuated after torrential rains brought by the southwest monsoon raised water levels to as much as 21.5 meters.
However, the rains began to ease Thursday afternoon.
Marikina’s rescue unit cautioned residents who fled their flooded communities to return home only when it is declared safe to do so.
The local government, joined by volunteers, will begin cleanup operations along iBP Road 9 a.m. Friday. (Aliana Gimena, InterAksyon.com)
