HANOI -- Vietnam ranks 18th place in the world's top 20 countries with over 30 percent of its population accessing the worldwide web, the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center said Friday.
As at end of June this year, the number of Vietnamese Internet users reached 31 million (35.4 percent of the population), of which 4.3 million are landline broadband subscribers.
The ranking maintains the country's 8th place in Asia and 3rd place in members of the Southeast Asian Nations, reported the Ministry of Information and Communication.
Insiders attributed the increase of Internet users in Vietnam to good price and policies, especially those applied to 3G (third generation network) wireless access.
According to the ministry's Internet development plan, landline broadband currently reaches 6-8 subscribers per 100 people, which will increase to 15-20.
Households with access to the Internet currently account for 35-40 percent of the nation's households, which will increase to 45-50 percent by 2020.
