MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino III has directed the Science and Technology department and the MMDA to seek alternative measures to de-clog the metropolis’ drainage system, and come up with better technology for flood control, as he continued to rally the Cabinet on more sustainable ways to battle floods.
Accompanied by Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino, Mr. Aquino inspected the Binondo Flood Control Pumping Station in Manila on Wednesday.
Later, he discussed alternative means to improve its operations to mitigate flooding problems in the city.
President Aquino also urged the MMDA to seek alternative measures to de-clog waste materials caught in the drainage system and suggested that the agency seek alternative technology from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to help solve flooding problems.
The MMDA currently operates and manages 51 pumping stations, 21 large pumping stations, 10 small pumping stations and 20 relief pumping stations.
It recently completed the construction of the Uli-uli Pumping Station in Manila last April 30.
