MANILA, Philippines -- Not long after news broke that a private plane carrying Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo had crashed off Masbate, Malacañang began tweeting developments on the search and rescue efforts for the Cabinet member and his companions.

Palace spokesman Edwin Lacierda began sending out the first tweets until the task was taken over by Transportation Sec. Manuel Roxas II, the designated spokesman for the rescue efforts.
