Immediately after Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno was appointed Chief Magistrate, keywords such as "Chief Justice," "Supreme Court," "Maria Lourdes Sereno," "Justice Sereno," "CJ Sereno," and "Sereno" became trending topics on Twitter.

While some were excited at the prospect of a woman with "legal competency, unquestioned integrity, endless energy, deep spirituality, and humility" in power, as Ateneo de Davao University President Fr. Joel Tabora, SJ, put it, others were doubtful of her independence from Malacañang, even sending their "condolences" to the country, as Arroyo lawyer Ferdinand Topacio put it.
